MARCUS MATHERS INTERVIEW
After his show stealing bout against Tony Deppen at GCW Dream On, BCP+ was joined briefly by our BCP Up & Comer of 2021 award winner, the one and only Marcus Mathers at The American Dream Mall in Rutherford, NJ. The recently WWE ID’ed prospect talks about his match with Deppen, the IWTV Independent Wrestling World Championship, and other goals moving forward.
Marcus, thank you so much for a few minutes of your time. Big night tonight here at American Dream. How are you feeling?
Marcus: Thank you so much. I’m doing really good. We just got done here at American Dream. Tonight has been insane. Marcus Mathers and Tony Deppen. I’m absolutely on Cloud 9.
We know you really wanted this match against Tony Deppen. You guys put on a heck of an opening match here tonight. With all the excitement leading up to this one, were there nerves before heading out to the ring?
Marcus: Ya know, a lot of nerves. Before I came out, I looked out, and I was like wow! It was insane. All the people. The view. It’s something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. And I really try to be in the moment.
But taking on Tony Deppen, that’s a GCW OG. This is what I want. And I didn’t get the job done tonight, but I gave it my all. And I showed that I do belong here at GCW.
You’ve already accomplished so much so early in your career, what are the goals here specifically in GCW?
Marcus: Short term goals are to be on shows that I’m not always at. GCW doesn’t stop. I love being a GCW East Coast guy, but I do want more. I want to be on every single GCW show. On top of that I want championships. I want first time ever matches. There’s a lot of people here that I have not faced yet.
With everything going on with you right now and all the recent momentum, matches like the ladder match at IWTV 100, are you able to take a breath and reflect on everything? Or is it just foot on the gas pedal?
Marcus: It is 100% foot on the gas pedal. Moments like right now, Japan, and you brought it up, IWTV 100. A lot of people bring that up to me. And I think that match was a turning point for Marcus Mathers. At the time I didn’t realize how huge that show was. I did win that contract, but I never got the job done.
However, I did make a promise to myself at the beginning of the year to end 2024 as The IWTV Independent Wrestling World Champion. In December I’m going to take on Krule and this is my last shot. And I gotta get the job done. And I’m not just doing it for Marcus Mathers, I’m doing it for the fans.
