THE YANKEES ARE HEADED TO THE WORLD SERIES!!

- April Claudio, Contributor

Saturday night Carlos Rodon and the New York Yankees looked to clinch the American League Championship. Thanks to home runs by Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto, the Yankees are heading to the World Series for the first time since 2009.

Rodon had another great performance, pitching 4 2/3 innings, with 6 strike outs and 2 runs on 5 hits.

Bibee pitched better than he did in the beginning of the series, pitching 5 2/3 innings, with 5 strike outs and 2 runs on 6 hits.

The Yankees had the chance to score first in the first inning with Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto leading off with a single and a double respectively. However, Torres tried to score on Soto’s double and was thrown out at home. Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. both were hit by a pitch to load the bases but no runs scored.

The Guardians, however, scored 1 run in the second inning when brothers Josh Naylor hit a single and Bo Naylor hit a double. They scored another run in the sixth inning off a RBI single by Steven Kwan.

The Yankees tied the game in the sixth inning with Stanton’s 2 run home run.

From the bottom of the sixth inning through the ninth inning the Yankees bullpen held the Guardians to 1 hit and from the seventh through the ninth inning the Guardians bullpen held the Yankees to 2 hits sending the game into extra innings.

Hunter Gaddis, pitching the tenth inning for the Guardians, got Anthony Volpe to line out and walked Austin Wells to start the inning. Alex Verdugo grounded into a fielder’s choice at second but Brayan Rocchio had another fielding error leaving Wells safe at second. Jaysson Dominguez came in to pinch run for Wells. Next at bat was Torres who struck out swinging. But with 2 outs and 2 men on base, Juan Soto hit a home run putting the Yankees up by 3.

Luke Weaver, who pitched the ninth inning, continued into the tenth inning. He held the Guardians to 1 hit to close out the game.

The Yankees won 5-2 and clinched the American League Championship.

Now we wait to see who they will play in the World Series as the NY Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers continue their series Sunday. The Dodgers have the chance to clinch the National League Championship as they lead the NLCS 3-2.
