STEELERS WEEK 9 RECAP: TAKING COMMAND
- Tyler Yasembousky, Contributor
The 6-2 Pittsburgh Steelers would travel to DC to face the 6-2 commanders this past weekend. This would be a huge test for Pittsburgh as the Commanders have proven all season long that they are one of the best teams in the NFC.
They have the rookie sensation Jayden Daniels, who’s not only living up to expectations but he’s far surpassed them. Daniels is in the MVP talks which is incredible for a first year player.
On the other hand, we had Russell Wilson in his third start for Pittsburgh. He’s 2-0 going into this game against DC. Who would lead their team to a victory? The veteran former super bowl champion? Or the incredible rookie sensation?
The Steelers would start off hot with a CATCH OF THE YEAR nomination from George Pickens for a touchdown. DC would answer with a rushing touchdown from Austin Ekeler 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Steelers would score again this time with Russ hitting MUTHHHH. Russ hit Pat Freiermuth for a touchdown. DC would then add some more points with a FG. They then got another touchdown with another running score by Ekeler
17 - 14 DC ending the first half
The Commanders would start the third quarter with another rushing touchdown this time from Jeremy McNichols. Pittsburgh would answer with their own rushing touchdown Najee Harris scored with a 1 yd run.
DC would add another FG to end the quarter . 27-21 DC heading into the 4th. This is where we would run into some controversy
First the Steelers had the ball In the redzone about to score taking the lead….But they fumbled the ball, well that was the call but their was no replay or review of the turnover. Because if there would have been the running back was clearly down and touched before the ball ever came out.
It should have remained the Steelers ball.
The commanders will get the ball back in their own redzone basically . This is when another bad call happens
The Steelers defense played incredibly well and TJ watt should have got to Daniels for a safety but he was held and no flag ever came. So instead of 2 points and the ball back for Pittsburgh, DC got to punt the ball instead.
This is when the Steelers made the play of the game.
Russ has brought back the big pass to the Steelers offense. He would hit newly acquired Mike Williams for a 32 yd touchdown. It was a beautiful throw and a fantastic catch. Steelers take the lead 28-27.
DC had one final chance to get the ball and win the game. This is when the final controversy would take place.
Commanders QB Jayden Daniels had one last opportunity to mount a game-winning drive, but his pass to tight end Zach Ertz came up a yard short of the first down, turning the ball over to Pittsburgh with just under 90 seconds left.
On further review it looked like Zack made the first down, but there wasn’t enough concrete evidence to overturn the call.
The Steelers would get the comeback victory. 28-27 in one heck of a game. Russ once again had a good game. 14-28, 195 Yds, 3 TDs, 1 Int
Daniels was held scoreless by the Steelers defense
17-34, 202 Yds
No rushing or throwing touchdowns for the incredibly talented rookie this week. The Steelers now lead the AFC North at 7-2 .
