WWE SATURDAY NIGHT'S MAIN EVENT REVIEW

- Rob Crowther, Editor In Chief

Emanating LIVE from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, New York, WWE's Saturday Night's Main Event returned with a night filled with nostalgia, moments, and a few surprises.

Pre-show featured a quick matchup between A-Town Down Under and The Motor City Machine Guns, as well as an absolutely PHENOMENAL rendition of The National Anthem by the one and only Lilian Garcia.

Old school logos, classic referee attire, and the return of Jesse "The Body" Ventura on commentary set the tone early. Additionally, the surprise return of Pat McAfee got the Long Island crowd especially hyped.

The first match of the evening featured Sami Zayn against the returning Drew McIntyre. The hot crowd taunted McIntyre throughout, especially with "CM PUNK!" chants. "Sami Uso!" chants could also be heard throughout the match. Great opener here with some great counters, including a big boot counter to the Claymore followed by a Blue Thunder Bomb from Zayn. "This is Awesome!" chants added to the mix from the LI crowd. McIntyre outwits Zayn by baiting the honorary Uce in and out of the ring, meeting him with a Claymore for the win.

Up next, Liv Morgan defended the Women's World Heavyweight Championship against Iyo Sky. Great match between these two as Sky is arguably one of the most athletic on the whole roster, whereas Liv continues to get better and better. when thrust into the spotlight. Morgan is able to get the win cleanly here, but is confronted by Rhea Ripley on the ramp for a stare down post-match.

The third match of the evening was contested for The Men's World Heavyweight Championships amongst Gunter (C) , Damien Priest, and Finn Balor. Hard hitting match up here with triple threat rules in effect. Both big men showed their agility as well, including an Old-School/ Crossbody combo from Priest which got a big POP from the LI crowd.  More "This is Awesome!" chants from the WWE Universe, as Gunther looked like an absolute monster power-bombing Priest on the ringsteps, and power-bombing Finn in the ring for the win. Who can dethrone Gunther, if anyone?

Next up, the much anticipated Finals for the Inaugural Women's United States Championship tournament between Chelsea Green and Michin. Hot start here as both ladies throw everything they had at each other right out of the gate. Early interference by Piper Niven with a huge slam on Michin on the outside which may have been a huge gamechanger early on. "Let's go Chelsea!" and "Chelsea" chants throughout this match. "Woo woo woo" chants at Chelsea who tried to pay homage to her husband Matt Cardona with a Rough Ryder, which was reversed by Michin. Green's second attempt would connect, but wasn't enough to score the victory. Green impressed with a rare suicide dive through the ropes but unfortunately hit her partner Niven unexpectedly. Michin looked like she had the match won after a Meet da feet but Chelsea got HER feet on the ropes. Very loud "Chelsea" chants at this point from the LI crowd. Chelsea is able to hit a very innovative setup off the top buckle into a jumping unpretty-HER to become the FIRST EVER Women's United States Champion. On a personal note this is more than well deserved for Chelsea Green who is not only doing some of the best work of her career, but who is doing some of the best character work in pro wrestling today. â€‹

The main event of the evening saw WWE Champion Cody Rhodes defend the title against Kevin Owens in a long awaited marquee match. Rhodes wears the classic Winged Eagle Championship to the ring in an homage to the days of old. Owens starts the match baiting Rhodes, who doesn't wait around and goes on to attack Owens on the outside. Cody goes high risk early with a suicide dive on his opponent followed by a flurry of strikes and gourd-buster on the inside. After the flurry of offense Owens retreats. The rowdy crowd trolls the competitors with "We Want Stardust!" chants, to which Owens responds with a Stardust taunt and an immediate "Suck It' gesture. At this point the hot crowd continues to cheer and boo for every move. Cody hits the classic Bionic Elbow and a Disaster Kick, but it's not enough to put away Owens. Cody taunts much like the Viper before going for the Cody-Cutter, but Owens again retreats. On the outside, Cody uses the announce table and hits the Cody-Cutter successfully in the ring. KO is able to kick out and hit a stunner after inadvertently knocking out the ref. A new ref comes in, but he is taken out inadvertently by Rhodes mid-air. Owens goes for a steel chair, but Rhodes hits another Cody-Cutter. Rhodes hits a Cross Rhodes on the chair for the win. #ANDSTILL your WWE Champion, The American Nightmare, Cody Rhodes.

Post-match Owens runs back out to the ring and drops the champion with a piledriver. He's far from done. Medical tends to Cody with a stretcher, and Kevin Owens parades around the ring and ramp with the Winged Eagle Championship before heading to the back. (Shoutout Indie Darling Gabby Ortiz in the back) I believe this was all off the air. Cody is stretchered out in the back, as we are sent home on a somber note.

Another great evening of matches and moments for the WWE as we head into the best season of all, Rumble Season!! Keep it here on BCP+ for all your WWE coverage
